This swivel gun, along with two large cannon, muskets, and a saber,
was discovered by three divers in waters off Cliff
Haven in 1968. Cast at Moorsfield Works between 1735 and 1743 in
England, the gun was captured from the British at Ft. William Henry
in 1758 during the French and Indian War. British General Jeffrey
Amherst and his troops routed the French from Fort Carillon in July
of 1759 and pursued them northward. The French were anchored
between Crab Island and the New York shore when they scuttled three
ships and escaped by foot to Canada. The cannon, swivels, and other
armaments were thrown overboard so the British could not use them.
