Placed in service in 1874,
the Bluff Point Light was one of the last lighthouses to be manned on the
lake. It guided ships through the narrow passageway between the island and
the New York shore for almost 60 years. Its fifth-order Fresnel lens was
seen each evening from 1874 until 1930 when a steel tower was erected just
south of the structure. In 2004 the lighthouse was reactivated when the
light was removed from the steel tower and re-installed in the lighthouse.**
The Lighthouse Committee will be opening the Bluff Point Lighthouse on
Valcour Island for the season of 2008. The Lighthouse will be open to the
public May 25th and beginning July 6th, every Sunday through August 31st.
Hours of operation are from 1-3 PM.
The dates of the openings in 2008 are:
May 25
July 6,13,20,27
August 3,10,17,24,31
Come see small static displays interpreting the Lighthouse and the surrounding
area, the Fresnel lens, the Iron Tower, the Architecture, the Lighthouse Keeper's
family life, geology and ecology of the island, and the history of the
island, etc.
*If you are able to man the lighthouse on any of the
Sundays, please let us know. You would need to be there a half hour before
opening to do some light housekeeping, set out the materials and sign-in
book. You would need to answer questions, limit 6 people at a time to the
turret, and lock up at 3 pm. If you are
interested, please call 561-0340 or email the Museum at
director@clintoncountyhistorical.org and you will be contacted.
Special Note: Although the Lighthouse will be open, the Clinton County
Historical Association does not provide transportation. Those needing
transportation should contact the Champlain Valley Transportation Museum.
The museum provides transportation to Valcour Island and Crab Island aboard
the replica Sail Ferry "Weatherwax".
