AZRO and EDO WINSLOW -- 12th INFANTRYONE BROTHER CRRIED ON - Two brothers in their twenties enlisted in the 16th Infantry on September 26, 1861. They were mustered in on the same date to serve for two years in the 16th Infantry, in the second round of recruiting for the regiment. Azro was working as a teamster in Black Brook at the time of his enlistment and Edo was living with their parents, Levi Winslow and Adeline Castle, in Saranac and working as a general laborer.They made it to northern Virginia in time for winter quarters near Washington and, after sailing down the coast, arrived near Yorktown to begin their march toward Richmond. After their first battle at West Point, VA, thirty five miles up the coast, they marched another thirty-five miles to Mechanicsville and arrived there on May 22, 1862.While in Mechanicsville, Azro, became ill and died at the regimental hospital there. He was probably buried near the temporary hospital and never removed to a cemetery, so there is no record of his final resting place.Edo, the younger brother by five years, continued with the 16th through the heavy fighting of the Seven Days' Battles at the end of June and beginning of July losing over 240 men to casualty. They went into battle at Crampton's Gap in September and were held in reserve at Antietam three days later. At Fredericksburg in December, the decimated regiment were ordered to stand picket duty.After spending the winter at Falmouth, just north of Fredericksburg, they had two major battles at Marye's Heights and Salem Church west of the city and had another 154 casualties. Two weeks later, Edo came home to his grieving parents.After the war, he married Sarah Jane Pattison and they had a daughter, Jennie, who lived until 1973. Edo wasn't so lucky. He died in Mineville in 1883. In 1890, when the census taker enumerated the veterans who served in war, he reminded her that she was eligible for a pension based on her husband\'s service. She received a pension until 1929 when she died. The couple are buried in the Evergreen Cemetery in Keeseville.
