FRANK Z. WEST -- 97th and 152nd INFANTRY and U. S. ARMYCONFUSING CAREER -- SO MANY ALIASES - In September 1862, Milo A. West, who was born in Mohawk, NY, enlisted in the 152nd Infantry in Richfield, in Otsego County, a few miles to the south. During the almost two years he was in the regiment he deserted two months after his enlistment, was arrested and then incarcerated on Governor's Island in New York Harbor until June 3, 1864, until June 3, 1864. He was returned to his regiment and then went missing in action before Petersburg on June 22nd.On August 24, he enlisted in the 97th Infantry under the name Frank Z. West and was credited to Plattsburgh. He stayed with the 97th until he was mustered out at Hart's Island also in New York Harbor. Soon he enlisted in the regular Army and spent the next three years in the 27th U. S. Infantry and the 5th U. S. Artillery, but not until he had deserted from the 16th U. S. Infantry in which he enlisted in October 1865 after less than 6 months.He received an Invalids Pension in 1880 and a wife, Mary, applied for a Widows Pension that wasn't granted. We wonder the name of the person received the pension in 1880.
