HENRY A. WELCH -- 60th, 83rd and 97th INFANTRYWISCONSIN HOTEL KEEPER - Henry was a Civil War veteran who enlisted October 14, 1861, at Ellenburg to serve three years as a private in the 60th Infantry. At that time, he was listed as an 18-year-old, 5\'4½\" tall farmer, with brown hair, gray eyes and a dark complexion, born in Mooers Forks.\In the muster of June 1862, it was noted that Henry was absent sick at hospital at Relay House, MD. The next muster in August shows that he was absent sick at Fort McHenry, MD. He was discharged under a Surgeon\'s Certificate of Disability having served 9 months and 29 days. The examining surgeon determined that he was incapable of performing the duties of a soldier due to angina, disease of the heart and being underage.Henry stayed home for about eleven months on an Invalid's Pension and on July 7, 1863, he enlisted at Plattsburgh, to serve three years as a private in the 83rd Infantry, as a substitute for Mark Shelters, of Ellenburg.On May 6, 1864, Henry received a flesh wound in the left leg from a Minié ball during the Battle of the Wilderness. He was treated in the field and on May 24, 1864, then admitted to Campbell General Hospital in Washington. Later musters note he was in and out of hospital, sometimes absent without leave and had pay withheld and was charged for transportation back to the hospital.In June 1864, he was transferred from the 83rd to the 97th Infantry, and finally was mustered out on June 9, 1865, still due \$75 for his reenlistment bounty. Henry's obituary was published on July 6, 1933, Barron County News Shield, in Barron, WI.COL. H. A. WELCH - Henry A. Welch was born at Mooers Forks, Clinton County, New York, April 22, 1847, son of Jonas and Betsy Welch.In 1861 at the early age of 14 Years he enlisted in the 60th Inf., New York Volunteers, faithfully serving his country until he received his honorable discharge at the close of the war.In October 1871 he was married to Miss Jennie McCallum of Herman, NY. They came west settling at Augusta where they conducted a hotel. Later they conducted hotels at Mondovi, Hayward, and Menomonie. In 1903 he purchased the Cameron hotel which he continued to conduct until 1921 when he retired from business.Two children were born, Lillian E., who died in January 1922, and Harold A. of Minneapolis. Mrs. Welch passed away in March 1912. On Nov. 12, 1913, Mr. Welch was married to Mrs. Etta Cullen of Fort Henry, NY. Mr. Welch has been in failing health the last year although able to be about until on Monday when he was taken to Lakeside Hospital, where he passed away Wednesday afternoon, June 28, at the age of 86 years, two months and six days.He leaves to mourn his death his wife, one son Harold, one brother, Albert, Browns Valley, Minn., one sister, Mrs. Matilda Carter, Mooers Fork, NY, two grandsons and one granddaughter. Those from away who attended the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Harold Welch, Mr. and Mrs. Keith Welch of Minneapolis; Albert Welch and Adrian Schriebel of Browns Valley, MN; Mr. and Mrs. Fred Welch, Ezra Welch and Mrs. Neil, Eau Claire, WI.
