JAMES WOLF -- 2nd CAVALRY and 2nd VETERAN CAVALRYDISCHARGED FOR DISABILITY -- TWICE - James Monroe Wolf who was born in Franklin Falls in 1844 was the son of the local blacksmith and his wife -- James Monroe Wolf and Rosy Sanders. In 1850, young James was living there with a house full of brothers and sisters, other relatives and boarders who were working in the area.In October 1861, James enlisted in the 2nd Cavalry in Plattsburgh. He was mustered into Captain James Clarke's Company M in Scarsdale, NY, and the regiment started for Washington in the same month. They fought in northern Virginia from March to the end of early September 1862 and then went to fight in Maryland at Antietam. Shortly after the battle, James was discharged for disability at the Cranch Hospital that had been converted from the first Unitarian Church in Washington.Sixteen months later, after recovering at home, he enlisted as a veteran Plattsburgh. He joined the 2nd Veteran Cavalry for a town bounty of \$150 and a county bounty of \$200. While he was with the regiment, he fought in the Red River Campaign in Louisiana in the spring of 1864. Two months after the end of the campaign, James was discharged on a surgeon's certificate of disability from a camp along the Mississippi in July.He came home to Franklin Falls and farmed for the rest of his life. In 1931, James was buried in the Franklin Falls Cemetery.
