JUDSON WARE -- 22nd and 96th INFANTRY3 YEARS, 11 MONTHS, 24 DAYS IN SERVICE - Judson C. Ware first enlistedin the 22nd Infantry n Keeseville on May 7, 1861. The record showsthat he was mustered into Captain Oliver Peabody's Company C as aprivate on June 6th, and later in the month, he deserted. Some say hebecame ill and he returned home to Keene in Essex County.In February 1862, he enlisted again, thistime at North Elba, and went quickly through the ranks while theregiment in Virginia and North Carolina until the end of the war. Hislast promotion was his commission to second lieutenant on May 31, 1865.His Muster Roll Abstract is unusual in that it says he had a "freckledcomplexion."The Elizabethtown Post of October 29, 1908, carried his obituary --"Judson C. Ware, Esq., died suddenly and without warning at his LakePlacid home Monday evening in the 67th year of his age. He was the sonof Cyrus Comstock Ware and Mary Lee, bis wife, and was born in the townof Keene, NY. February 15, 1842. The father and mother of the deceasedwere married in 1839, the latter being the daughter of Seth and SophiaLee and a native of Lewis.In 1862, Judson Ware enlisted as a private in Company K, 96lh New YorkInfantry, and was in service of the Union most 4 years, being twicewounded. His bravery in action was noted and he returned home with therank Second Lieutenant. Dec. 21, 1870, Mr. Ware married Miss Carrie A.Brewster of North Elba, who with two sons, Edward L. and Vernon G.survives.Mr. Ware was for many years one of North Elba\'s most prominent farmers.He served as Collector, Justice of the Peace and Supervisor of NorthElba and Sheriff of Essex County, serving in the latter capacity fromJanuary 1877, to December 31, 1879, inclusive. During bis term assheriff, Mr. Ware and family resided in Elizabethtown, making many warmand steadfast friends here. Personally, the editor of the Post feels thedeath of Judson C. Ware keenly, and hereby acknowledge the loss of alifelong friend and expresses heartfelt sympathy for the sorrowingfamily."He was buried in the North Elba Cemetery in North Elba, NY.
