LEONARD G. WEST -- 46th INFANTRYSUBSTITUTED FOR HIS BROTHER - In September 1864, Leonard G. West, theson of Levi West and Rhoda Williams, left his ten siblings and hisparents on the farm in Minerva, NY, and enlisted in the 46th Infantryin Plattsburgh. He enlisted as a substitute for is brother, James J.West, and received a town bounty of \$600.The group of men with whom Leonard enlisted were sent directly to thebattlefield about 10 miles southwest of Petersburg near Hatcher's Run,By December, he became ill and was sent to hospital in Philadelphia andwas sent home from there in July 1865. He started his westward journeyin 1869.Leonard died at the Soldiers Home in Orting, WA, and his body wasbrought home to be buried in the Cashmere Cemetery.The Cashmere Valley Record in Cashmere, WA, of August 11, 1922. carriedhis obituary - CASHMERE CIVIL WAR VETERAN LAID TO REST -- "Funeralservices were held last Sunday afternoon from the Cashmere undertakingparlors for Leonard West, who passed away at Orting, WA, July 30. Theservices were under the charge of the local order of the I. 0. 0. F. ofwhich Mr. West was a member for many years.Mr. West who was a resident of the valley for many years and who only alittle over a year ago went the Orting Soldiers Home, leaves to mournhis loss besides his immediate relatives, a host of former friends andacquaintances with whom he was closely associated during his many yearsin the valley.Following the prayer and obituary which were given by Rev. McCartney,the I. 0. 0. F. services were given, during which two beautifulquartettes were rendered, \"Somewhere the Sun Is Shining\" \"BeautifulIsle of Somewhere.\" Besides the I. 0. 0. F. lodge, immediate relativesand old friends who filled the chapel to overflowing, W. R. C. attendedthe body.The remains were laid the Cashmere Cemetery beside of his wife whopassed years ago, the I. 0. 0. F. taking charge here also, beingassisted the local chapter the American Legion who fired the volleysover the casket and by Felix Kacson who sounded taps.Leonard L. West was born October 23, 1846, in New York and died July 30,1922, at the age of 75 years 9 months and 7 days. He served during theCivil War in Company B 46th regiment of the New York Infantry. After thewar in 1869 he moved to Minnesota where he was married in 1892 to MissMargaret E. James, to which union no children were born.After living at Grand Forks, ND. for several years, they came toCashmere in 1906. Mrs. West died January 15, 1915.Mr. West leaves to mourn his loss one sister, Mrs. A. A. Whitman ofVancouver, BC, and several relatives in different parts of the east."James West, for whom Leonard substituted, died in Minnesota in 1910.
