LOUISOUELLETTE -- 96th INFANTRYTRAGEDY IN 1920 - Louis Ouellette left his parents, Augustin Ouellette,and Julie Dubois, at home in St. Cuthbert, Quebec, on the north shore ofthe St. Lawrence River about 90 miles northeast of Montreal. By Decemberof 1861, he had enlisted in the 96th Infantry in Champlain under thename of Louis Willette. He was assigned to Captain George Hinde'sCompany K, the last company formed in Plattsburgh where they weremustered in.The 96th left for Washington by train on March 11, 1862 and joined theArmy of the Potomac when they put men on 350 transports and sent them toYorktown on the Virginia Coast.Louis' record in the Chazy Town Clerk's office indicates he was in thebattles of Williamsburg, Fair Oaks, on the Virginia Peninsula andGoldsboro in Wayne County, NC and Little Washington in Beaufort County,NC on the New Bern to Goldsboro Campaign. That spring, Louis wasdischarged for disability and came home to Champlain.When he died in 1928, he was buried in the New St. Mary's Cemetery inChamplain with his wife, Mary Therrien, who had died on May 15, 1920,his daughter, Marie and Sophia, who died on May 19, 1920, and his son,David, who died on May 21, 1920.
