MILO E. WASHBURN -- 93rd and 175thINFANTRYENLISTED IN PLATTSBURGH FOR 2nd TOUR -- 37 year-old Milo E. Washburnenlisted as a private in the 93rd Infantry in September 1861, at IndianLake. He was promoted to 2nd lieutenant in January 1862, and soon sawaction at the Siege of Yorktown, Williamsburg, Malvern Hill, Antietamand Fredericksburg.Less than a month after Fredericksburg in December 1862, Milo wasdischarged. The 93rd went on to fight at Chancellorsville, Gettysburgand the Wilderness, finally disbanding in 1865.Milo re-enlisted in the 175th Infantry in Plattsburgh in August 1864,making captain the next month. He was active in the last couple ofmonths of the Red River Campaign, in Louisiana, then joined the Campaignof the Carolinas under General Sherman in March 1865.In April, his regiment was near Goldsboro, where diehard GeneralJohnston still had an active fighting force. Sherman and Johnstonentered into truce negotiations on April 17. Two days later, Johnstonsurrendered at Bennett House, NC.After Milo mustered out in Savannah, GA, in August of 1865, he returnedto Long Lake, his wife, Harriett, and his children. He died in 1877, atage 56, and is buried beside Harriett at Cedar River Cemetery, IndianLake, NY.
