MOSES WOOD -- 65th and 121st INFANTRYARRESTED AND INCARCERATED - On September 8, 1864, Moses Wood, a20-year-old who was born in Canada, enlisted in Plattsburgh to serve forone year or until the end of the war. He had black eyes, black hair, adark complexion and was 5' 6" tall. Garner Pope from Franklin Countywho, in later life, would become and iron manufacturer, hired him to behis substitute. The going rate for a substitution was \$300. He alsoreceived town and county bounties for enlisting.After he got to Virginia, Moses deserted within a week, and, accordingto his Muster Roll Abstract, was arrested on September 17th and wassentenced to serve one year in prison from February 28, 1865, by SpecialOrder 24 of the Department of the East.On June 24, 1865, while he was incarcerated, he was administrativelytransferred to the 65th Infantry, a sister regiment to the 121st,and was in the Shenandoah Valley at the time.
