PERCIVAL VOLTURNA WEEKS -- 118thINFANTRYJANUARY 3, 1924, OBITUARY - the Adirondack Record-Elizabethtown Postpublished Percival Volturna Weeks' obituary.The venerable Percival V. Weeks died at his home in the town of Westportlast Thursday, after a few hours' illness, aged 87 years. He was a10-month veteran of Company G of the 118th Infantry in the Civil Warwho enlisted in Plattsburgh and had drawn pension since 1878. He was foryears a member of S. C. Dwyer Post No. 528 G. A. R.The early manhood of Percival V. Weeks was spent in the Town of NorthElba, where he was well acquainted with such pioneers as Iddo Osgood,Jackson Brewster, Joseph V. Nash, Daniel Ames, Robert Scott and WilliamB. Nye of "Hitch up Matilda" fame. Percival learned to butcher and inNorth Elba's pioneer days used to kill and dress hogs and cattle for theearly settlers. In fact, he continued butchering till nearly, if notquite, fourscore.He moved over into the Town of Keene, settling in Keene Valley where heresided several years and where his eldest daughter now resides, beingthe wife of Frank Holt, the far-famed taxidermist. In the early 90s, Mr.Weeks sold his Keene Valley property to Salvador de Mendonca, theBrazilian Minister, who built the magnificent country place now owned byCharles Gibson, head of Gibson-Snow Company, Albany druggists.Over 30 years ago, Mr. Weeks purchased the small farm of the late GeorgeF. Agnew in the Boquet Valley and moved to Elizabethtown. He lived onhis farm in the Boquet Valley till a few years ago when he and hisyoungest son, Garfield, purchased the farm of John L. Vaughan in theTown of Westport, which they have since owned and successfully tilled.He is survived by two sons, William of Lake Placid and Garfield ofWestport, and two daughters, Mrs. Frank Holt of Keene Valley and MissJennie Weeks of Westport. A son, Arthur, died in Elizabethtown about 23years ago.Funeral services were held at 10:30 am last Saturday, the body beingtaken to the Norton Cemetery in Keene for burial beside his wife, theformer Jane Witt, who died a ten years ago.
