PHILANDER WOODWARD -- 5th CAVALRY4 MONTHS IN THE ARMY - In the 1863 Draft Registration Records forTiconderoga, Philander Woodward and two brothers, Charles and Alexanderand their occupations were given as "sailor." It wasn't until March 1865that he was mustered into the 5th Cavalry in Plattsburgh.In i865, the 5th Cavalry was part of the Army of the Shenandoah and bythe time Philander joined them, Lee had surrendered, and the war wasover. The regiment performed guard and provost duties as well as gettingthe equipment and horses ready for sale or return to the Regular Army.He mustered out on July 19, 1865, in Winchester, VA.Philander, who was born in Bolton, NY, returned to Ticonderoga where hewas living with his wife, Charlotte, in a community of boatmen and boatbuilders.He died in Ticonderoga in June 1892. Several months later, someoneapplied for an Invalid's Pension in New Jersey, based on Philander'sservice, but the application was not pursued.
