THOMAS HENRY WHITE -- 118th INFANTRY and 49th WI INFANTRYDISCHARGED FOR DISABILITY TWICE - Thomas Henry White, the son of WilburWhite and Lydia Giviniau, was born in Altona in 1842. He was stillliving with his parents when he enlisted in the 118th Infantry inPlattsburgh in August 1862, and was assigned to Captain William Bailey'sCompany H. The regiment was in Washington when Thomas was admitted toFinley General Hospital in April 1863 and was discharged or disabilityon May 27th..He spent some time in Massachusetts and then returned to Clinton Countywhere the family decided to move West with the first stop in Syracuse.In February 1865, Thomas enlisted in the 49th Wisconsin Infantry whenthey were recruiting for their new regiment. He was again discharged fordisability on June 17, 1865.By the 1880s, the family was in Nebraska where his father died in May1882. In November of the same year, he married Mary Billings (MarieBelisle) who was over 20 years his junior. They started their family ofsix children, two of whom died in infancy and one who lived until 1969.In the couple's later years, they moved to California to be with theirdaughter, Flora Belle. Thomas died in Ontario, CA, near San Bernardino,in 1896, and was buried in Bellevue Memorial Park in Ontario, under amilitary headstone. Mary continued to live in Ontario and died in 1951.After Thomas' death, she applied for pensions for herself and her theirminor children which were granted.
