THOMAS WILSON -- 96th INFANTRYCAME TO THE BORDER TO ENLIST - Thomas Wilson's father, Thomas, came toQuebec in the late 1820s. By 1830, he had married a local girl, PhebeMoe in Hemmingford. The family lived in villages along the border --Hemmingford, Russelltown and Franklin Centre. Thomas Wilson, Sr. died in1857 , in 1860, the widowed Phebe was living in Franklin Centre withfour of their children. In April 1861, walked up the hill to the hamletthat straddled the border, Frontier, NY, and enlisted in the 96thInfantry.He was mustered into Company K and soon was promoted to corporal. InJune 1862, during one of the Seven Days' Battles, he was wounded a sentto hospital. In July 1863, Thomas was transferred to the 10 Regiment ofthe Veteran Reserve Corps then the 8th Regiment of the Veteran ReserveCorps where he stayed for the rest of the war.Thomas married Lucy Plumly in Ellenburg in October 1865 and in November,his mother died. The couple stayed in Ellenburg until the 1880s untilthey moved to Poultney, VT. He died there in 1897 and was buried in thePoultney Cemetery. Lucy received her pension until 1900 when she diedand was buried beside him.
